What is a MEDICAL oncologist?

A Medical oncologist is a physician who is trained in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors.

Medical Oncologists often oversee and coordinate cancer care with colleagues in Radiation Oncology and Surgery.

A Medical Oncologist specializes in the use of medications such as Chemotherapy, Hormonal Treatments and targeted therapies to manage this disease.

More recently, Medical Oncologists have been utilizing biologic agents as part of their war against cancer. Medical Oncologists often participate in the diagnosis of cancer with the use of a variety of diagnostic procedures such as Endoscopy, CT and MRI Imaging, as well as PET Imaging. These procedures are also used for staging a patient's cancer.

Finally, Palliative Care is another important area of Medical Oncology in which the purpose is to treat pain and other cancer related symptoms.
